Funeral Dinner
October 14th
Dear diary, I am going to die. Well, obviously. That sounds pretty existential, so let me clarify: I am going to die in the very near future. There are a number of ways it could happen now and none of them are very appealing. Every trip Ive ever taken has involved some sort of disaster: arriving at the bus terminal late, lost luggage, flight cancellations. But Id never experienced a plane crash before.
I was going to Paris. I told my wife it was a business trip but, heres the kick

Cadaver Hotel
I live inside of your corpse. Stealing
in through the incision
between your ribcage and hipbone, I burrow
myself inside of your embalmed organs and
wrap my fingers around your bones,
clutching until my knuckles turn
the same kind of white.
Though you are dead,
your body sometimes quakes-
spasms and sends a flash-pulse of postmortem waves
over me. For quick sucks of air,
I crawl up and out of your pretty mouth, careful
not to hit your crooked teeth.
To avoid dying inside of you-
oh, how I long to-
I have taken
to gnawing on the insides of your cheeks
and the sinewy parts of your
atrophied muscles.

I normally don't do a lot of first person writing, but I started this as an experiment and I think it worked very well, much like A Little Ghost Story. This is a very lightly edited second draft, so I know it still needs some polishing. I would appreciate any and all feedback.
Advanced content for language and situation.
*Update: Edits and changes with thanks to Demonlight for her input. I'll wait a day or two and update it one last time.

Okay, I did a lot of thinking and searching after speaking to Bringa about this piece. I think this version works a little better, but I also think it has a little more impact. I know it's not spot-on perfect just yet, but I am going to stick to this version. I think this suits me very well. Thanks to everyone who's given me feedback, I appreciate it!

Wow. This story brings the memories back. I worked for years as an EMT, ER tech/orderly, and morgue orderly, so I am more familiar with ghosts of this type than I would like to be. Very few of the people I worked with over the years would even adknowlege this sort of thing, let alone be able to speak or write about it with such eloquence and visceral intensity. Bravo.
I'm not going to comment on the technical aspects of the story, since there is nothing I could say that hasn't been said already, and I am not much of a writer to begin with.
